Oak Island Trip (June 16-19, 2022)

If you would love to explore the depths of the Apostle Islands, this trip is for you. We will depart from Bayfield, paddling to Oak Island, setting up a base camp at the group site, and venturing out on daily day trips. You will have several choices as to where we will go including Raspberry Island Lighthouse, Manitou Island Fish Camp, Bear Island, and so on. There is even great hiking opportunities if the weather is rough or you want to take a break from paddling for a day. If you like a little more challenging trip into the Apostles, this is the trip for you. The trip will be 4 days and 3 nights.
Launch will be in Bayfield on Thursday morning early (exact time TBD). It is recommended to arrive the night before.
The trip is aimed at people who have previously been on Lake Superior or other similar large body of water and want to explore further from the mainland.
Minimum skill requirements:
- Must be comfortable in waves up to 2 feet
- Must be comfortable in winds up 15 knots
- Must be able to demonstrate to the organizers a wet exit outdoors
- Must be able to demonstrate to the organizers an assisted rescue outdoors (rescuer and rescuee)
- Maintain a reasonable paddling speed for crossings
- Have good boat handling skills
- Paddle 15 miles in a day (with breaks)
Minimum Gear Requirements
- Sea Kayak (16 ft or longer) with spray skirt, bulkheads (or float bags), and deck lines
- 2 paddles
- PFD
- Helmet if you want to play among the rocks and go into the sea caves.
- Immersion wear – a dry suit is HIGHLY recommended for this time of year, wet suit is minimum. Warm shoes, gloves, underlayer, etc.
- Compass
- Map or chart
- Paddle float
- Bilge Pump
- Whistle
- Water bottles
- First Aid Kit
Camping Equipment:
- This is wilderness trip so you must be prepared for camping (i.e. tent, sleeping bag, water filter, stove, appropriate clothing, dry bags, etc.) in an isolated area. Food
- Each individual needs to supply and cook their own food. Bring enough food for the trip and another day or two worth of food just in case. You may plan meals with someone else, but you must coordinate that yourself.
