As If Challenge

What: The As If Challenge is a leadership and skill development day.

The day is broken into situations and challenges a group may encounter while touring on a large body of water. These situations and challenges are designed to foster teamwork, develop new skills, and to offer an opportunity for team learning.

Where: Locations vary...

...but due to the structure of the day, the lakes tend to be larger lakes with powerboat traffic present. These lakes will also have longer crossings and fetches. These distances, combined with wind speed, could create waves that we will use to simulate waves on a larger body of water. The As If Challenge will be canceled due to lighting or adverse conditions as deemed by trip leader. On the discretion of the trip leader, the As If Challenge location or goals my be changed due to other weather or group dynamics. Outside of this happening, participants should be prepared to paddle in challenging conditions.

Who: As If Challenges are open only to ISK members, who feel they meet the requirements listed below and registration is required via the ISK webpage.

Why: As If Challenge is set up with a structure to challenge and develop new leadership and paddling skills.

How: The event is designed to mimic an extended tour on a large body of water...

... and therefore it is expected that participants are prepared to paddle at least 15 miles at a 3.5 mph pace. Along with these pace and distance expectations, participants should be able to perform both self and team rescues. Due to the structure of the As If Challenge, the required gear list is different and there is also a basic skill requirement list.

Additionally: An optional debriefing session...

... will occur afterwards at our house, for the participants. This review is when the greatest part of the learning occurs.
