One definition of navigation is knowing where you are and how to safely and efficiently get to where you want to go.  That's a good thing to know how to do if we go farther than the local lakes.   Whether you want to start learning navigation or review, practice and sharpen your existing skills, this class is for you.

Taught by Peggy O'Neal, Michelle Forseth, and Jeff Forseth, the class will cover:

  • Route planning
  • Piloting and dead reckoning
  • Charts, compasses and bearings
  • Magnetic variation
  • Aids to navigation
  • Lines of position and fixing position
  • Introduction to tides and currents
Class will include an optional day paddle on Lake Minnetonka in the spring, specifically focused on navigation.

Please bring the following to class:

  • Base plate compass (if you're not sure what that is, you can search for the term on REI's website and see some examples)
  • Straight edge (e.g., ruler)
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Notepad and pen for taking notes

Optional Items (if you already have them):

  • Lake Minnetonka Fishing Hotspots map (note that you will need this map if you do the As If paddle and for the on-water portion of this class, so you may want to get it now if you don't have it.  Available at Gander Mountain stores)
  • Trails Illustrated map of the Apostle Islands National Park
  • Any navigational tools you have and want to practice (parallel rulers, nav aid, dividers)
  • Chart Number 1
  • Chart:  If there's a trip you want to spend time planning in class (if time permits), bring along the chart.
