Join trip leaders Peggy O'Neal and Rebecca Hoye over the Sept. 15-16 weekend for a couple of day trips in Winona, MN.

Winona is a river town located about 120 miles southeast of the Twin Cities on the Mississippi River.  It has the mighty river itself, big bluffs, barges, winding sloughs, and even a pair of mysterious islands.  Here are photos from prior trips.

Housing is on our own, but many of us will stay at the Prairie Island Campground Saturday night.  CHANGE FROM PRIOR YEARS:  It used to be that we reserved a couple of sites and then paid individually for each tent.  The campground has changed ownership, and now you reserve and pay for a site and can put up to two tents on it.  Price per site is $26 plus tax.  You can reserve online at the above link.  I'm in site 170.  Campground management recommended 167, 168, and 169.  Last year's spot is not in good shape.

We'll meet at the campground ready to drive to the day's put in at 10:30 AM Saturday morning.  People can either drive down Friday night or early enough Saturday morning to have sorted out lodging and be ready to roll at 10:30.

We'll plan to paddle a combination of the river and the backwater sloughs each day.  We'll have dinner Saturday night and breakfast out Sunday morning at restaurants in Winona.

Each day's paddle may be up to 15 miles.  We'll paddle up and/or down river from the day's put in and return.  Participants should be able to paddle at a 4 mph pace all day, and be comfortable in moving water. The river is big enough and wide enough to have a good sized fetch (up to 4 miles), so it can generate some good sized waves.

The trips will be level 3 by distance, otherwise level 2. Please review the Anticipated Conditions and Recommended Skills in the ISK Trip Levels document.

Equipment Requirements
  • A sea kayak in good, serviceable condition, and suitable for the intended activity.
  • Flotation in both ends of the boat - bags or bulkheads.
  • Perimeter deck lines.
  • PFD to be worn at all times when in or on the water.
If you have time, consider visiting the excellent Minnesota Marine Art Museum the Friday before or Sunday afternoon.
