About this event

Where: Wilderness Inquiry Base Camp (at Little Sand Bay)

When: Friday, May 23 - Monday May 26

Who: All ISK club members

What: We have reserved the Wilderness Inquiry Base Camp and  are able to have up to 22 people IN CAMP.

Cost: $25/person*

You may be asked to sign a waiver for Wilderness Inquiry. Watch emails with further details about camping, potlucks, etc.

There are 3 registration options. Need help getting through the registration? Here's a quick tutorial to guide you through the options and getting those family paddlers & guests registered.  How to Register Guide

  • Please register for this event by May 20th. This will help ensure we have the proper number of paddle leaders.
  • Potluck: Please bring something to share with the group. Watch trip emails to see if there will be a specific meal for food sharing or if it will be more casual again.
  • Designated leaders will lead day trips.  We do out best to ensure day trips for all levels at least one of the days.  As the weather does change quickly on Lake Superior, last minute decisions will be made by each trip leader.  Please pay close attention to departure times.
  • To join in paddles, you need to be a member of ISK.
  • See the Trip Description & Requirements below to gauge your preparedness. Email Alida if you are unsure.
  • All other ISK trip guidelines apply.
  • Participants are responsible for their own boat, (boat must have bulk heads and full perimeter deck lines) gear, food, etc.
  • The water will be cold! Dry suits are highly recommended, a wetsuit is required at a minimum
  • If you have questions about gear, skill level, camping, etc., please email Alida at alidawintern99@gmail.com.

*If you bring a spouse or child, whether paddling or not, they must be registered and paid for to cover the campground reservation costs to the club.

Get Your Own Site:
If you will be paddling with us, but are finding your own camping or lodging accommodations, you must register for the Rendezvous as a non-camping paddler.

To get your own campsite at Little Sand Bay, register with Township of Russell. https://townofrussell.org/little-sand-bay-recreation-area/

This is an ISK Level 4 Trip

A Level Four day trip is the highest ISK trip level that you will experience in a non-coastal environment. Group expectations will be set by the leader for each paddle.

A Level Four day trip raises the expected condition to:

  • You may encounter waves that consistently break over the deck of your kayak.
    These waves may cause instability.
  • There may be scattered whitecaps present.
  • Potential spots to stop to rest or get off the water could be up to three hours apart.
  • These stopping places may present difficult landing spots.
  • The trip duration could be up to six hours and cover up to 15 miles.
  • You may experience heavy boat traffic that requires two-way communication with them.
  • An emergency kit should be carried for unexpected extended or overnight stays.
  • An example of a Level Four trip is a journey in the Apostle Islands.

Requirements

The Board requires all who plan on paddling to have appropriate boat and paddling gear and to perform a T-rescue outside, witnessed by a board member, as the swimmer, at a minimum. Rescue will only count if you fully exit your boat.

Look for the following events to practice and prepare:

  • Cold Water Immersion
  • Wednesday & Sunday club paddles
  • Impromptu paddles as they are added to the forum

If you would like to be a trip leader or co-leader, please contact Alida at alidawintern99@gmail.com.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact any ISK board member. We welcome all to join us at our board meetings.
