Are you ready for a kayak-camping trip?!

This Voyageurs National Park experience, led by Tom O'Neal and Linda Pascoe, is a great opportunity to explore ‘an unsung paddling gem of the national park system’.

If you are new to kayak camping (packing your kayak, camping or route finding) we will be paying special attention to these areas before and during this trip (a pre-trip meeting will be scheduled shortly after this trip fills):

  • What food should I pack?
  • What gear do I need?
  • How do I pack a kayak?
  • What if it rains?
  • What about mosquitoes? And the wood ticks?
  • Should I bring s'mores?
  • Will there be campfire stories? Can I tell a campfire story?

We will launch from Ash River Visitor Center Thursday morning and return Sunday, making a base camp at Torry Fish Camp (site N43) on Kubel Island, Namakan Lake. Your registration fee will cover your share of the campsite reservation fee.

There are 6 registration slots available. Our site has 4 tent pads. Each tent pad will have 2 tents on it (usually two ‘2-person’ tents can fit on a pad) unless 2 people are sharing a tent on one pad.

Expected conditions for this trip are ISK Level II.

Winds <14 mph, Scattered whitecaps, Waves up to 2'.

Total distance each day up to 11 mi. See level descriptions & recommended skills on the ISK website: https://isk.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=195893&module_id=109753

We follow Leave-No-Trace principles, with a particular focus on "pack in, pack out" - pack out ALL trash, leftover food and litter.
If you want to try your skill at fishing, don't forget your fishing license. Both Linda & Tom will once again attempt to catch something. You’re welcome to use our fishing poles if you have license in hand!

We strongly encourage you bring a Voyageurs National Geographic Map (#264, Printed 2010, Revised 2015). It’s fun to figure out where we are, where we want to go, and how many miles remain to our destination.

Feel free to bring a piece of poetry or a campfire story to share. If it rains...entertainment is welcomed.
After a successful trip, all participants will receive a one year membership in the Namakan Literary and Pan-fried Walleye Society, current President Tom O'Neal.

Any questions please contact trip leaders.

If the trip fills, let us know if you want to be on a 'wait list'.
